Goran Trendafiloski was born in Ohrid, Macedonia. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje, Macedonia. He obtained his M.Sc. and Dr.Tech.Sci. in earthquake engineering at the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS), Skopje, Macedonia in 1995 and 2003, respectively. In 1997 he obtained a postgraduate special degree in analysis and management of geological risks (CERG), University of Geneva, Switzerland.
During 1995-2003 he held a position of teaching / research assistant at IZIIS in the field of earthquake engineering. In 2003, he obtained a position of Assistant Professor at IZIIS, for Seismic Risk and Vulnerability Assessment. He was a lecturer at the International course CADAC (period 2000-2007) for the following subjects: Planning and a-seismic design of lifeline systems, planning for seismic risk reduction and environmental engineering. During 2000 – 2005 he was a member of the Macedonian Red Cross Committee for protection against natural disasters. During the same period he was also engaged by the Civil Protection and the Ministry of Education of Macedonia as well as the UNICEF Skopje-Office for issues of earthquake related emergencies. He worked as an expert for hospital seismic vulnerability evaluation for the World Health Organization, Regional office for Europe (WHO-EURO) in 2005 and 2006. He was a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM), Harbin, China during October 2006-2007. Since November 2007, he is a Senior Research Scientist at WAPMERR in Geneva, Switzerland.
His principle fields of expertise are the following. Elaboration of earthquake scenarios and real-time assessment of losses, vulnerability and risk assessment of urban regions, lifeline earthquake engineering, planning for disaster preparedness and management, damage and loss assessment in earthquake stricken areas, emergency response, implementation of GIS techniques in seismic risk estimation and reduction. He published more then 80 scientific publications, books, papers and reports.
In 2003 he obtained the Award of the Macedonian Association of Structural Engineers (MASE) for the Scientific Work of the Year.
