Philippe Rosset was born and raised in Haute-Savoie, France. He earned an MS in geophysics at the Institute of Earth Physics, Paris. He obtained a post-graduate certificate in hazard and risk mitigation and his PhD in seismology at the Earth Sciences Department of the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
After his master, he participated in the GEMITIS project (seismic risk study of Nice, France) as fellow scientist for the French Geological Survey in Marseille, France. During his Geneva period, he was involved in the compilation of the gravimetric atlas of Switzerland and in national seismic hazard studies. He had similar experiences in Barcelona, Spain and Toscana, Italy in the framework of the European project SERGISAI that aimed at building an integrated tool for seismic risk assessment. In 2001, he left Geneva for Montreal, where he initiated a seismic microzonation study of the city with the Geological Survey of Canada and McGill University. During 2003-2005, he was in charge of the seismic site-dependent studies at the Royal Observatory of Brussels in Belgium. The cities of Mons and Brussels were investigated at that time. Since March 2007, He is senior researcher at the World Agency of Planetary Monitoring and Earthquake Risk Reduction in Geneva.
Philippe Rosset scientific publications deal with the following topics among others. Physical properties of rocks, 2D gravimetric modeling, deterministic and probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, site response analysis and seismic microzonation.
The awards he received included Excellence Fellowships from the European commission in various aspect of natural hazards. He was a scientific fellow of the European Seismological Commission, of IIASA, Austria, of the Swiss Science Foundation and the European Science Foundation.
He has consulted in seismic hazard analysis for private companies and public organizations in Canada, Luxembourg and Belgium.
